I always tell my students that they must think outside of themselves (not the darn box). Research, Explore, Experience! Visit museums, galleries, art festivals, etc. however, don't forget the power of a good book. A good book can bring you on some of the most exquisit adventures. My daughter has started a reading journal this summer to collect her inspirations. As a new reader she is keeping her journal very basic. She has three sections. She is collecting words (this will help her remember fun words for variety and proper spelling). She is collecting characters. (She is writing down the character's name and who/what the character is, ex: Mittens = Cat.) Finally she is collecting ideas. This is where she can write down the moral of the story or inspirations and collect them for later use. Ask some of those "What if", "How" and "Which" questions when you read, this is where the stories will begin to come to life.
